Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Benin

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Cotonou where he notably met with Yayi Boni, President of Benin and Chairperson of the African Union. A budgetary support programme to Benin "Contract for Good Governance and Development" worth € 50 million was signed. José Manuel Barroso then participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Jean Monnet mini libraries of the Zinsou Foundation and visited an exhibition.
The President praised the country for its efforts in fostering stronger democracy and sustainable development, saying that Benin served as a democratic model for the whole African continent. He also expressed his appreciation for the work done by Boni Yayi, notably for the role he played as head of the African Union, working to stabilise the troubled situation in the region.
