Visit of Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC, to Greece

Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, went to Greece, in the border areas near Turkey, more precisely in Komotini, Venna and Feres, where she visited several detention centres for migrants who have come across the Greek-Turkish border.
She then went to Athens where she met with several Members of the Greek Government.
In its communication of April 2012, the Commission indicated that it provided considerable financial support for asylum, migration and border management systems and to address the humanitarian consequences of the pressure generated by high numbers of irregular migrants and asylum seekers. Greece adopted two plans in this area: an Action Plan on Migration and Asylum Management, identifying concrete actions to address shortcomings in asylum and return; and a "Schengen-Greece" Action Plan" identifying concrete actions to address shortcomings in border management.
