Visit by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Jordan

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Amman where he attended the closing ceremony of the 24th EU Film Festival with Rym, Princess of Jordan.
On the same day a new €4.6 million donation to Unicef was signed for emergency education programmes of refugee children in Jordan. At the announcement of this new donation, the President highlighted that it was necessary to ensure that families who had to flee their country could live in decent conditions and that their children didn't lose their right to education and to a brighter future.
The total EU contribution for the project reached €10 million for the year 2012. The EU was fully behind Jordan's political, economic and social reforms, and its financial assistance to the country was a clear expression of that. To this end the EU had already allocated €220 million for the period 2011-2013 and had recently assigned an additional €70 million from the "Spring" (Support for Partnership, Reform and Inclusive Growth) programme. A "Good Governance and Development Contract" worth €40 million was also signed on 07/10/2012.
José Manuel Barroso also met with Abdullah II, King of Jordan, and underlined the importance of the country as partner for the EU, as a key regional actor and interlocutor in the Middle East. The two leaders shared the overarching objective of promoting peace, stability and prosperity. They reviewed last progress in Jordan’s reform process. The President also commended the country for its solidarity towards Syrians who have fled the country seeking refuge and visited the Za'atari refugees camp in Mafraq with Anthony Lake, Executive Director of Unicef.
