Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to the United States

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to New York where he participated in the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He notably attended the High Level Plenary Meeting on the Rule of Law, with Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba, Deputy Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations. In his speech, the President highlighted that primary values of the EU were democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights. He added that it was a priority for EU to work to strengthen the rule of law both at the international level and to uphold international law in the national systems.
José Manuel Barroso then met with Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, and Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank. On 26/09/2012 the President went to the United Nations with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, to meet with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations. José Manuel Barroso then made a speech on the occasion of the opening of the new office of the EU Delegation to the United States.
For his last day of visit, the President made a speech entitled "European Union: An indispensable partner" at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.
