Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Bulgaria

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Bulgaria where he participated in the opening ceremony of the second metro diameter of Sofia at the "Serdika" metro station with Boyko Borissov, Bulgarian Prime Minister.
In his speech the President said that the Bulgarian authorities and the EC together completed this project that served to stimulate the economy, make traffic safer and faster, and allow for a more pleasant urban life. He highlighted that this is what the EC meant when it talked about green, smart and sustainable growth. José Manuel Barroso also added that this metro line was a demonstration of what could be achieved through the EU structural and cohesion funds.
The bilateral meetings with Rosen Plevneliev, President of Bulgaria, and his Prime Minister focused among others on the use of EU funds in Bulgaria, the latest cooperation and verification mechanism (CVM) report, the country's accession to Schengen and on structural reforms. During the joint press conference with Boyko Borissov, José Manuel Barroso stated that a real push was needed on pension reform, the fight against poverty, youth unemployment and on administrative capacity to improve living standards and keep the Bulgarian economy growing. In the areas of judicial reform and the fight against corruption, the President called for a consistent political effort. He also reiterated the Commission's unequivocal support for Bulgaria joining the Schengen area.
