Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC, to Mozambique

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, went to Mozambique. First the President met with Armando Emílio Guebuza, President of Mozambique. They together attended the signature ceremony of the agreement "Local Development Project" with a value of 23.2 million euros. Three bilateral agreements totalling € 37 million and including this last, were signed. They aimed to boost local economic development, to support civil society groups and to reinforce the rule of law and public accountability.
José Manuel Barroso then met with Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique and Founder and Chairman of the Joaquim Chissano Foundation, and Verónica Macamo, Speaker of the Mozambican Parliament. The President also took part in the PALOP (Países Africanos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa : African Countries of Official Portuguese Language) Summit.
On the occasion of his participation in the 9th Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa - CPLP) Conference José Manuel Barroso reiterated the EU's commitment to assist in the further development and consolidation of this like minded organisation of 8 States, comprising 250 million people.
The President and Andris Piebalgs then went to Beira where they visited the Mozambique’s largest waste water treatment plant (ETAR) together with Carvalho Muaria, Governor of Sofala. This project was financed by the EU. They also visited the harbour of Beira, the fishing company Pescamar (Sociedade de Pesca de Mariscos, Lda) and a project of professional training for young people financed by the EU. José Manuel Barroso and Andris Piebalgs eventually met with Daviz Simango, Mayor of Beira.
