Brussels informal European Council, 23/05/2012

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and the Heads of State or Government of the EU met in Brussels for an informal European Council convened by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. The Heads of State or Government especially discussed the political and economic situation in Greece and the latest developments in the euro area. They also met to prepare the decisions to be taken in June 2012 on the "Growth Agenda" in Europe.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that the EU 2020 Strategy was the basis for the growth initiatives of the Union. In the short term, they would structure their work around 3 pillars: to mobilise EU policies to fully support growth, to step up the efforts to finance the economy through investments and better access of SMEs to credit, and to strengthen job-creation.
