NATO Summit, 20-21/05/2012

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the NATO Summit in Chicago with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Barack Obama, President of the United States, and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO. On 20/05/2/2012 they attended the meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the principal political decision-making body within NATO.
The next day, José Manuel Barroso and Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, represented the EU on NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) meeting on Afghanistan. The President confirmed on this occasion that Afghanistan remained a priority for the EU at that time and beyond 2014. The EU would do its part to ensure that Afghan development was both durable and secure.
The EU and its Member States provided more than 1 billion euros a year in support for Afghanistan, from which €200 million per year came from the EU budget, including support for the civilian police.
