G8 Summit in Camp David

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, took part in the 38th G8 Summit which was held in Camp David, together with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Barack Obama, President of the United States and President of the G8 Summit, Yoshihiko Noda, Japanese Prime Minister, François Hollande, President of the French Republic, Mario Monti, Italian Prime Minister and Minister for Economy and Finance, David Cameron, British Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, German Federal Chancellor, and Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister.
Besides the economic situation, G8 leaders discussed global challenges such as food security, the fight against poverty, climate action and energy security. The debate also covered international issues, such as Afghanistan and the Arab Spring.
During the joint press conference, José Manuel Barroso highlighted that the EU was taking decisive action to foster sustainable development, increase agricultural resilience and reduce poverty, promoting democratic values and the rule of law and enhancing international stability. He added that he EU was ready to rise to global challenges with responsibility and solidarity, in the G8 and beyond.
