Visit of Robert Fico, Slovak Prime Minister, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Robert Fico, Slovak Prime Minister. The President paid tribute to the Prime Minister's commitment to a reform agenda along the lines indicated in the 2011 Country-specific recommendations. José Manuel Barroso welcomed Robert Fico's desire to work with the EU institutions in a serious and constructive way. He highlighted he was confident that the Slovak government would engage actively in the implementation of established EU policies and efforts to exit from the financial and debt crisis. The President mentioned two key challenges: the budgetary consolidation and also making full use of its labour market potential.
Following the informal European Council of 30/01/2012, a joint action team was established with Slovakia to see how structural funds could in the short term strengthen national efforts to combat youth unemployment and help small and medium sized enterprises (SME) to create jobs. In this situation, more than ever it was absolutely key to use EU funds effectively and efficiently and to accelerate the implementation on the ground.
