Visit of Catherine Ashton, Vice-President of the EC, to Burma/Myanmar
Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, went to Burma/Myanmar, where she notably met with Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy of Burma/Myanmar and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
They visited the headquarters of the National League for Democracy (NLD). Catherine Ashton then met with Members of the "88 Generation" Students group. The Vice-President also opened the new office of the EU Delegation to Burma/MYanmar. She stressed on this occasion that the office demonstrated the commitment of the EU to Burma/Myanmar and the ongoing reform process.
On 29/04/2012, Catherine Ashton met with Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, and U Htay Oo, Secretary General of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) of Burma/Myanmar.
The Vice-President ended her journey by a meeting with Thura U Shwe Mann, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Burma/Myanmar, and Thein Sein, President of Burma/Myanmar.
