Visit of Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia. Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, and Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, were also present at the meeting.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso stated that the EC fully supported the President's reform and modernization agenda, and remained committed to deepen its engagement with Armenia in the framework of the Eastern Partnership.
He added they were ready to launch talks on a deep and comprehensive free trade area (DCFTA) which was part and parcel of the Association Agreement that the EC was already negotiating with Armenia. This was to a large extent, the result of Armenia's efforts to comply with the key recommendations of the EC. José Manuel Barroso congratulated Serzh Sargsyan on his leadership in this process.
