Visit of Catherine Ashton, Vice-President of the EC, to Jordan

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, went to Jordan where she participated in the 1st meeting of the EU/Jordan Task Force with Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh, Jordanian Prime Minister, and Nasser Judeh, Jordanian Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The Task Force demonstrated the EU's determination to accompany Jordan on its process of democratic reforms towards a just and inclusive society with democratic rights, social justice and economic opportunity as key features. Catherine Ashton and Jafar Hassan, Jordanian Minister for Planning and International Cooperation, signed two agreements from 2011 funds with a total value of €20 million to support small and medium enterprises (SME) and to support research and technological development and innovation.
The EU/Jordan Task Force was the second task force in the Southern Mediterranean since the Arab Spring began, with the first held in Tunis in September 2011. This Task Force was set up to help address the challenges Jordan was facing in its political and economic reform process. It also aimed to coordinate more efficiently the support of the EU, of its Member States and a number of European and international bodies, with a particular focus on short- and mid-term policies and initiatives adopted by the Jordanian government.
Catherine Ashton then met Abdullah II, King of Jordan.
