Visit of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to India

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to India mainly to participate in the 12th EU/India Summit with Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. The theme of this meeting was "A partnership for prosperity". Ashwani Kumar, Minister of State to the Indian Ministry of Planning, and Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, notably signed a Joint Declaration on Research and Innovation Cooperation.
José Manuel Barroso also attended a tribute ceremony to Mahatma Gandhi with Geertrui Windels, wife of Herman van Rompuy. He then met Rajendra Pachauri, President of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of India. The day finished with a meeting with Members of the staff of the EU Delegation to India and a reception with the Ambassadors from different Member States to India.
On the second day the President met K. Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra and Goa, and his wife, Radha. For the third day of visit, José Manuel Barroso went to "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharajah Vastu Sangrahalaya" (CSMVS), formerly "Prince of Wales Museum of Western India". He then visited the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Mumbai.
To close this visit to India the President visited the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) with Subramanian Ramadorai, Non-Executive Chairman of the BSE, and Madhu Kannan, CEO of the BSE. He also met Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, several Indian Business Representatives and Industry Leaders. José Manuel Barroso then paid tribute to the victims of the 26/11/2008 terrorist attack at the Trident Hotel. He eventually attended an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) around the theme "EU/INDIA: a strategic relationship in an evolving world".
