Brussels informal European Council, 30/01/2012

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and the Heads of State or Government of the EU met in Brussels for an informal European Council convened by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. Discussions mainly focused on youth unemployment and growth.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso announced that the Treaty establishing European Stability Mechanism (ESM) was ready for signature and would enter into force in July 2012. He then explained that the meeting concentrated on discussing growth and employment, namely the programme against youth unemployment, the problems of the SMEs and the problems of the Internal Market. He added he had also proposed some concrete policies on fight of youth unemployment, the single market and small businesses. Some of these proposals could be done quickly and make their impact felt rapidly.
He then exhaustively presented the National Job Plan to tackle youth unemployment and stressed that to support the small businesses, which form the backbone of the European economy, it was necessary to do more internally, with the market access in the single market, but also abroad.
The President concluded stressing the importance to "keep the course, to be determined, to be coherent, to be persistent".
