Participation of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, in the EP plenary session

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Olli Rehn, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Euro, participated in the EP plenary session which focused on the outcomes of the European Council of Brussels of 09/12/2011.
The main purpose of this Council was to show joint determination to tackle persisting market tensions by consolidating these achievements and reinforcing them even further. Indeed an agreement was reached to create a genuine "fiscal stability Union"; a new "fiscal compact". The President stressed it was indispensable to have more discipline, structural reforms for more investment, more convergence, and credible mechanisms of solidarity because all these elements belong together.
José Manuel Barroso also focused on presentation of the key elements of the new fiscal compact and highlighted a number of important conclusions of the European Council which matched the EC's position for some time. He eventually underlined that the EC would monitor how the Member States have been living up to their additional commitments made in this agreement. The President concluded stressing that coherence and persistence would be needed for the implementation of the growth agenda for the EU. This was what citizens expect from the leaders: Europe of responsibility but also Europe of solidarity, Europe of stability but also Europe of growth and employment.
José Manuel Barroso also attended the weekly meeting of the Barroso II Commission and the EP plenary session which focused on the conclusions of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU. He stated that under difficult circumstances the Presidency has delivered very important achievements and has worked with great professionalism and enthusiasm. He then thoroughly presented achievements of the Presidency and underlined that Poland had constantly pushed for more Europe to address efficiently a crisis.
The President eventually gave a joint press conference with Jerzy Buzek, President of the EP, and Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU.
