EU/US Summit, 28/11/2011

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, met Barack Obama, President of the United States, and Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State, for the EU/US Summit. Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, and João Vale de Almeida, Head of the Delegation of the EU to the United States, were also present.
Discussions focused on global economic issues, bilateral relations and opportunities to promote growth and jobs. Foreign policy issues, including how best to contribute to the development of democracy and prosperity in the European neighbourhood, including north Africa and the Middle East, as well as the promotion of common values in other regions of the world, also were on the agenda.
The EU and the United States reaffirmed their determination to work closely together for the stability of the global economy and for the benefit of the peoples. They decided to create a High-Level Working Group for Jobs and Growth in order to help ensure that the transatlantic economy could be an engine for the recovery of the world economy. This group would examine how to strengthen the EU/US trade and investment relationship and in so doing boost growth and job creation.
José Manuel Barroso stated that the EU and the US shared a firm belief in freedom, democracy, human rights, and prosperity; these hallmarks of the societies and what bound them together.
After the Summit the President went to the US Senate to meet with several Senators.
