Visit of Janez Potočnik, Member of the EC, to Copenhagen
Janez Potočnik, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, went to Copenhagen where he visited the bees project of the European Environment Agency (EEA) with Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the EEA, and Karen Ellemann, Danish Minister for Environment.
The EEA has been keeping bees on its roof since April 2011. The two hives sat on the roof of the five-storey building in central Copenhagen, and during the summer were home to approximately 80,000 bees. These hives provided an estimated 100kgs of honey per year. The hives were managed by the Bybi (Danish for ‘City Bee’) social enterprise, which trained formerly homeless people in beekeeping.
Keeping bees on the roof provided an excellent opportunity for the EEA to get hands-on experience of caring for the productive systems of the planet. Environmental projects like this showed how social and environmental benefits often went hand-in-hand. This positive experience could inspire other cities across Europe to start similar projects.
