Press conference by Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC, on agreed nuclear stress tests

Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, gave a press conference on agreed nuclear stress tests. From 1 June 2011, all 143 nuclear power plants in the EU were re-assessed using EU wide criteria. These were comprehensive tests as the EC had called for after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima which followed the seism in Japan in March 2011. The tests embraced both natural and man made hazards, like effects of airplane crashes and terrorist attacks. The EC and the European Nuclear Safety Regulators' Group (Ensreg) agreed on 25/05/2011 on the criteria covered and the way controls would be done. The ensreg represented the 27 independent national authorities responsible for nuclear safety.
