Participation of José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, in the public commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the OECD

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the public commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). On this occasion he made a speech to call for "New approaches to tomorrow's challenges".
The President reaffirmed the need to promote development and political reforms in the neighbouring countries especially in the aftermath of the upheavals in the Arab world which took place in the beginning of year 2011. This support had to be shown through actions and not just words. The promotion of open trade, democracy and development was core to the OECD's values. It was also the guiding principle of the European Union's response to the changing neighbourhood.
José Manuel Barroso recognized the very good cooperation which the EC and OECD had on international governance and G20 matters. Both institutions were faced with unprecedented challenges and the OECD had to continue to play a crucial role in promoting a stronger and fairer global economy. The President highlighted that the EU and OECD had to continue to work together and to play a pivotal role in defining global solutions required by global challenges.
