José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, Connie Hedegaard, Member of the EC in charge of Climate Action, Štefan Füle, Member of the EC in charge of Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, and László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, participated in the 9th European Business Summit entitled "Europe in the world: Leading or lagging?". This event was a joint initiative of the Federation of Enterprises of Belgium (FEB-VBO) and BusinessEurope.
In his address to European business leaders, José Manuel Barroso said that a new economic governance, coupled with structural reforms and more intensive policy coordination, could stabilise the foundations of Europe's economy and internal cohesion. He expressed the hope that the system of governance and the country specific recommendations that the EC presented at the beginning of June 2011 was adopted by the Member States. The President added that he couldn't see in Europe one government that was not committed to structural reform.
On the occasion of this Summit, Viviane Reding also made a statement on the reform of the EU Data Protection Directive and the impact on businesses. Štefan Füle participated in the session entitled "Turkey: Building bridges for prosperity".
