José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship, and Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, participated in the study days of the European People's Party (EPP) Group.
The President outlined the EU's willingness and action to support the democratic transition in the Southern Mediterranean and expressed his conviction that this partnership can be of mutual benefit. He also outlined the EC's vision of a common migration and asylum policy, based on responsibility and solidarity. José Manuel Barroso said that migration pressure was not just a national problem but a European one requiring a joint European response. He appealed not to abandon Schengen, but cherish its achievements in terms of freedom and security, while ensuring its proper functioning.
