Visit of Takeaki Matsumoto, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs, to the EC

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and Karel De Gucht, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, received Takeaki Matsumoto, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs in the context of the preparation of the next EU/Japan Summit to be held in late May 2011. The central theme of the Summit will be the launch of a possible Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the EU and Japan.
On the aftermath of the tragic earthquake, the President also reiterated the EU's sympathy and support to Japan. In the light of the Fukushima incident, he stressed the importance of reinforcing global nuclear safety standards.
