The participants at the EU Energy Ministers Coordination Meeting on nuclear plant situation in Japan and nuclear security

In Japan, thousands of people died and entire villages were razed by a particularly violent earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami. In the days following the disaster, the Japanese authorities faced additional difficulties due to problems with three nuclear reactors.
A team of nuclear experts was set up within the Commission. These specialists are already exchanging information and are ready to provide assistance if the situation in central Japan were to deteriorate further.
In this context, the 27 EU Ministers for Energy of the met in Brussels on 15 March with the representatives of the 27 national nuclear safety authorities, as well as operators and vendors of nuclear power plants. The meeting was called by Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, in order to get first hand information on contingency plans and safety measures in place.
After the meeting, a joint press conference was given at the Berlaymont.
