Visit of Catherine Ashton, Vice-President of the EC, to Tunis

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, went to Tunis where she notably met Mohamed Ghannouchi, Tunisian Prime Minister, and Radhouane Rouissi, Tunisian State secretary at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
Catherine Ashton reminded that the EU was wholeheartedly behind the Tunisian people’s aspirations for freedom, democracy and dignity. The Vice-President was also there to try to stem the exodus of around 5,000 Tunisians who had arrived on the island of Lampedusa in Italy fleeing the insecurity and uncertainty in their country.
Tunisia has reached a point of no return in their history and the EC paid tribute to the courage and dignity of the people in their peaceful struggle to be the owners of their own destiny.
