Launch of the European Year of Volunteering 2011 in Budapest

2011 is the European Year of Volunteering. It has four main objectives: to remove obstacles to volunteering in the EU; to improve the quality of volunteering; to reward and recognise volunteering activities; and to raise awareness of the importance of voluntary work as a means of promoting social cohesion and solidarity across Europe in an increasingly competitive and globalised economy.
Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, Pál Schmitt, President of Hungary, and Stavros Lambrinidis, Vice-President of the EP, ceremonially launch the European Year of Volunteering 2011 (EYV2011). The event also saw the inauguration of the Hungarian stage of the EYV2011 Tour – a one-year travelling roadshow that visits the capitals of each Member State to give volunteering organisations the opportunity to showcase their work and engage with policy makers and the general public.
