Launch of the festivities in Tallin, European Capital of Culture 2012
Each year, cities chosen as European Capitals of Culture provide living proof of the richness and diversity of European cultures. Started in 1985, the initiative has become one of the most prestigious and high-profile cultural events in Europe. Tallinn was chosen to be the European Capital of Culture for 2011. The opening ceremony in Tallinn was held on New Year's Eve, with a major public concert and a firework display. Many cultural events have been planned for Tallinn in 2011: a series of exhibitions, concerts and live events will be held throughout the year and, as the city is by the sea, which will be a recurrent theme.
