Visit of Algirdas Šemeta, Member of the EC, to China

Algirdas Šemeta, Member of the EC in charge of Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud, embarked on a three-day visit to Shanghai, where he opened an international conference, organised in the frame of the World Expo 2010, which he also visited.
The aim of the conference was to explore ways to enhance further customs cooperation between the EU and China, in order to allow a smooth trade flow between both sides while providing citizens with a high level of protection. Securing the supply chain, tackling smuggling (particularly of cigarettes) and protecting intellectual property rights were high on the agenda.
During his stay in China, Algirdas Šemeta discussed key issues related to customs and anti-fraud measures with national authorities and business representatives, and visited the port of Shanghai to see first-hand how Chinese customs controls operate.
