Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science, went to Munich on 24 June to celebrate the European Research Council's (ERC) 1000th grant, awarded to Erika von Mutius, German Professor in Immunology and Paediatrics. Annette Schavan, German Federal Minister for Education and Research, and Helga Nowotny, President of the CER, also took part in the ceremony hosted by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU). Máire Geoghegan-Quinn visited the Max-Planck Gesellschaft in the afternoon and later signed a "Statement of Intent" with the seven leading inter-governmental research organisations which constitute EIROforum, pledging to work more closely together to develop the European Research Area.
