The island of Samsoe: an example of a self-sufficient community in renewable energy

Samsoe is a 114 km2 Danish island located off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula and consists of 4150 inhabitants. The island is known for its agriculture, in particular potatoes and strawberries, but it is also known for being a self-sufficient community in renewable energy. The people of Samsoe heat their homes with straw burned in a central heating system and they run their vehicles on biofuels. Now 100% of its electricity comes from wind power and 75% of its heat comes from solar power and biomass energy. An Energy Academy has opened in Ballen and keeps abreast of the latest technologies in renewable energies, and their successful implementation with exhibitions and educational workshops, which are very popular among tourists.
