ATLAS operation of the Fontex Agency

Frontex, which began operations on 3 October 2005, has its headquarters in Warsaw. Its role is to strengthen border security by ensuring the coordination of Member States' actions in the implementation of Community measures relating to the management of external borders through intelligence driven activities. Frontex is a key player in the implementation of the common EU policy for Integrated Border Management and it actively promotes the gradual development and the effective functioning of the EU Integrated Border Management System. It also liaises with other enforcement agencies such as Europol, CEPOL and EMSA, as well as being involved in customs, phyto-sanitary and veterinary controls to promote overall coherence.
