Visit by José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, to Norway

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, paid an official two-day visit to Norway. The main themes of the visit were energy security and climate change, also the main themes of the 2008 Europe Conference, where José Manuel Barroso gave the opening speech. José Manuel Barroso took part in a meeting in Oslo with Jens Stoltenberg, Norwegian Prime Minister, and other members of the government, as well as Haakon, Norwegian Crown Prince and Thorbjørn Jagland, President of the Norwegian Parliament (Storting). José Manuel Barroso travelled to Svalbard in the High North with Jens Stoltenberg, to open a global seed vault. The purpose of the initiative is to store duplicates of seeds from collections around the world in chambers of Arctic permafrost. If seeds are lost - as a result of natural disaster, for example - the seed collections may be re-established using the duplicates in Svalbard. José Manuel Barroso also visited the Arctic Research Village in Ny-Ålesund which is an international research settlement with 9 participating countries, seven of which are European countries.
