Press conference by Franco Frattini on a comprehensive vision for an integrated European border management system for the 21st Century
Franco Frattini, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, gave a press conference on a comprehensive vision for an integrated European border management system for the 21st Century. The new proposals affect third country nationals, especially those in the Schengen area. The proposals are as follows: the creation of an electronic register of dates of entry and exit to combat the problem posed by people entering the EU legally, but whose visas have expired; the creation of a European Border Surveillance System (EUROSUR) to prevent unauthorised border crossings, reduce the number of illegal immigrants losing their life at sea and prevent cross-border crime; better use of the EU Border agency FRONTEX, in particular by intensifying joint operations between Member States in sea border patrols. The proposals should come into force from 2012.
