EU/Brazil Summit

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, and Peter Mandelson, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, participated in the 1st EU/Brazil Summit. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, José Sócrates, Portuguese Prime Minister and President in office of the Council and Janez Janša, Prime Minister of Slovenia, were also present. José Manuel Barroso said: "This first Summit is a historic step in our relations with Brazil. The strategic partnership is about facing each other as global partners and to raise the level of our co-operation in a host of areas of common interests. By increasing our joint efforts with Brazil, we can make a difference in global debates on poverty or climate change."
