Press conference with Stavros Dimas, Member of the EC, on water quality
On the World Day for Water, Stavros Dimas, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, Sigmar Gabriel, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and President in Office of the Council, Francisco Nunes Correia, Portuguese Minister for Environment, Portuguese Minister for Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development, representing Portugal who will take over the Presidency in the second semester of 2007, and Karl-Heinz Florenz, Member of the EP, gave a joint press conference. They presented the report on the performance of EU Member States in implementing the Water Framework Directive. The aim of the directive is to achieve a good level of water quality in the EU by 2015. They also launched the Water Information System for Europe (WISE), a web portal developed with the European Environment Agency that gathers a wide range of water-related data from across the European Union.
