Brussels European Council, 15-16/06/2006

The Heads of State and Governments of the EU met under the Austrian Presidency for the European Council. They adopted a calendar foreseeing to end the negotiations, reforging the Constitutional Treaty based on the report that will be presented by the German Presidency, in June 2007 or at the latest by the end of 2008 under the French Presidency. The objective being to lay down the framework for renewed institutions in 2009, before the renewal of the EC and EP. José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, proposed the adoption of a political statement in2007, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which: "will not only be a commemoration of the past, but also a way of displaying our ambition for the future".
