Inaugural meeting of the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU with the EC

On the occasion of the inaugural meeting of the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU with the EC, the Members of the EC met members of the Dutch Government for a round table on the strategic priorities of the EU. Romano Prodi declared that, after the approval of the text of the first Constitution of Europe, the next stage would consist of hearing the best arguments in national debates, in order to ratify the Constitution. Moreover, he fixed three priorities: firstly the advancement of the package of legislative measures relating to the financial perspective; secondly, the deadline of the end of July for the adoption by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) of the "methods" frameworks, in order to revive the Doha negotiations; and finally, the decision expected in autumn on the advisability of starting accession negotiations with Turkey, according to the adoption and the opinion contained in the EC's report on this subject.
