EU/US Summit

This has been the last EU/US Summit at which Romano Prodi has participated as the President of the EC. Since the elargement, the European Union has become an important economic and political actor on the global scene. In the discussions with President George W. Bush, Bertie Ahern, Irish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council, and Romano Prodi, President of the EC, have spoken in the name of more than 450 million Europeans. The EU and the United States adopted seven important Joint Declarations, addressing many of the key challenges that face the world today. The agreement on cooperation between the two global satellite navigation systems, GALILEO and GPS, was signed. Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Christopher Patten, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations, Pascal Lamy, Member of the EC in charge of Trade, Loyola de Palacio del Valle-Lersundi, Vice-President of the EC in charge of the Relations with the EP, of Transport and Energy, Brian Cowen, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mary Harney, Irish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Colin Powell, US Secretary of State, and Condoleezza Rice, National Security Adviser, also attended the Summit.
