Visit by Romano Prodi, President of the EC, to Turkey

Romano Prodi, President of the EC, paid an official 3-day visit to Turkey. It was the first visit of a President of the EC since 1963. He inaugurated an information office designed to inform the public about the EU. He was accompanied by Abdullah Gül, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs. Romano Prodi, while insisting on the accession criteria, declared that he was very satisfied with Turkey's progress: "Not only is the direction good, but the speed is remarkable." On the basis of a report of progress made by Turkey towards accession to the EU, the European Council of December is set to decide whether to open the accession negotiations with Ankara. President Prodi also stressed the EU's strong preference for the accession of a united Cyprus to the EU on the 1 May, 2004, following a settlement based on the UN peace plan, and insist on the benefits of such an outcome for Turkey.
