Statement by Robert Schuman

On 9 May 1950, in the Clock room of the Quai d'Orsay, Robert Schuman, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, made public a declaration of his government in front of representatives from the international press. Jean Monnet had played a decisive role in the preparation of this declaration which aimed to gather coal and steel resources of former enemy nations, making impossible new wars among them. It marked the beginning of the European integration policy and led to the founding of the first of the European Communities; the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC).
