The United Nations, the European Commission and the Belgian government have combined their efforts to launch together the UN’s inter-organisational appeals for 2002. During a conference organised in Brussels, Ruud Lubbers, UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Poul Nielson, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, presented their appeals concerning the Great Lakes region, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and south-east Europe. The inter-organisational appeal brings together 25 agencies and UN partners in a joint effort to reply in a coherent and efficient fashion to the needs of civil populations which have been victims of the world’s humanitarian crises.
