Signing of the LEADER agreements for Portugal and Spain

Ray Mac Sharry, Member of the CEC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, received Luis María Atienza Serna, président de l'IRYDA (Institut espagnol national de réforme et de développement de l'agriculture), and José Alberto Guerreiro dos Santos, Director-General for Planification and Agriculture at the Portuguese Ministry for Agriculture, who together with commissionner Mac Sharry, respectively signed the LEADER ('Liaison Entre Actions de Développement de l'Économie Rurale', meaning 'Links between the rural economy and development actions') agreement for Spain and Portugal. The LEADER programme is an initiative taken by the Commission within the framework of the Structural Funds that seeked to demonstrate the importance of direct support for local Community-based initiatives in the development of rural areas.
