Simone Veil, President of the EP, at the European Parliament
Simone Veil was born in Nice in 1927. Between 1974 and 1979 she was French Minister for Health. She was a Member of the European Parliament from 1979 until 1993. During the EP's first plenary session in 1979 she was elected President, a position she held until 1982. In 1993 she returned to the French Government as French Minister for Social Affairs, Health and City. From 1998 to 2007 she was a member of the French Constitutional Council. She was elected to the "treizième siège" (thirteenth seat) of the Académie française in 2008.
