Press conference by Sicco Mansholt on Denmark's accession

Sicco Mansholt, President of the CEC, held a press conference on the results of the Danish referendum as the Danes voted 63,5% in favour and 33,5% against joining the European Communities. The President congratulated the Danes, the Community and the other Nordic countries with this result. In reply to journalists' questions, the President further stated: - I hopeand I am convinced that the other Nordic countries will one day also vote to join the EC; - it is of the greatest importance that our peoples are ever more informed about and involved in the measures and decisions taken by the Community in Brussels; - I have heard so many lies, told about the Community in Norway, that I have started to wonder what the value of this referendum really is. Did most Norwegians really know what they were voting for or against? - there can never be question of re-negociating international treaties, when in one of the countries concerned a new government comes into power. One has negociated, signed and ratified a treaty with 9 countries and this can not be re-negociated unless you get the permission of the other eight. And that seems unthinkable.
