Signature of the Accession Treaty of Greece to the Communities

On 28 May 1979 the signing ceremony of the Accession Treaty of Greece to the European Communities took place in the Zappeion of Athens. The ceremony was chaired by the French delegation which included Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, President of France, Jean-François Poncet, French Minister for Foreign Affairs and President of the Council, Pierre Bernard-Reymond, French State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and Luc de La Barre de Nanteuil, French Permanent Representative to the EC. The Greek delegation was headed by Konstantinos Karamanlis, Greek Prime Minister, and was composed of George Contogeorgis, Greek Minister for National Economy, Georgios Rallis, Greek Minister for Foreign Affairs. Members of the other delegations signatory to the Treaty were composed of Lord Carrington, British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and Donald Maitland, British Permanent Representative to the EC, representing the United Kingdom, John Lynch, Irish Prime Minister, Michael O'Kennedy, Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Brendan Dillon, Irish Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Ireland, Giulio Andreotti, Italian Prime Minister, Adolfo Battaglia, Under-Secretary of State to the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and Eugenio Plaja, Italian Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Italy, Gaston Thorn, Luxembourgish Prime Minister, and Jean Dondelinger, Luxembourgish Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Luxembourg, Christoph van der Klaauw, Dutch Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Jan Hendrik Lubbers, Dutch Permanent Representative to the EC, representing the Netherlands, Wilfried Martens, Belgian Prime Minister, Henri Simonet, Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Joseph van der Meulen, Belgian Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Belgium, Niels Anker Kofoed, Danish Minister for Agriculture, and Gunnar Riberholdt, Danish Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Denmark, and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Helmut Sigrist, German Permanent Representative to the EC, representing Germany. Also parts of the attendees were Roy Jenkins, President of the CEC, and Lorenzo Natali, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Enlargement, Protection of the environment, Nuclear Safety and Relations with the Parliament.
