Heads of State and Government meeting on the euro
The Council has met at the level of Heads of State and Government and has decided that 11 Member States fulfil the necessary conditions for the adoption of the single currency on 1 January 1999. The Council has also adopted two regulations on the harmonisation of technical specifications of coins drawn in euro and on the introduction of the euro. Furthermore, the ministers of economy and finance, the governors of the central banks of the Member States adopting the single currency, the EC and the European Monetary Institute, have specified the conditions for the fixation of the irrevocable euro conversion rates.
