Yasser Arafat, President of the Palestinian Authority and Nobel Prize for Peace in 1994, and Jacques Santer, President of the EC, assisted at the opening of the "Bethlehem 2000" conference. The objective of the project "Bethlehem 2000" was to celebrate the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ and the arrival of the new millennium. This commemoration started at Christmas 1999 and ended at Easter 2001. The conference was an important initiative which aimed to reinforce relations and promote the participation of the international community in the project. The conference was organised in collaboration with the EC, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Bank.
