Visit of Samora Machel, President of Mozambique, to the CEC

Gaston Thorn, President of the CEC, Edgard Pisani, Member of the CEC in charge of Development, and Lorenzo Natali, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Mediterranean Policy, Enlargement and Information, received Samora Machel, President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, Mozambican Minister for Foreign Affairs, Armando Emílio Guebuza, Mozambican Minister for the Interior, and Rui Baltazar Dos Santos Alves, Mozambican Minister for Finance. The discussions held during the visit were related to problems of cooperation between Mozambique and the EC. In this regards issues regarding the humanitarian programme for food aid to the Mozambican peoples and the interim cooperation development programme including, among others, a series of agricultural and fishery projects were addressed. Other issues discussed were: the participation of Mozambique in the renewal of the Lomé Convention on 6 October 1983, the involvement of Mozambique in the SADCC (the Southern African Development Community Conference) and its continuous action in favour of the isolated countries of the region in order to have a better regional integration between the 9 SADCC States facing problems related to the apartheid in South Africa and the future of Namibia.
