Visit of Richard Nixon, US President, to Brussels

Richard Nixon, US President, met with Jean Rey, President of the CEC, Raymond Barre, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Economic and Financial Affairs and the Statistical Office, Fritz Hellwig, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of General Research and Technology, the Joint Nuclear Research Centre and Dissemination of Information, Sicco Mansholt, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Agriculture, Lionello Levi Sandri, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Social Affairs, Personnel and Administration, Victor Bodson, Member of the CEC in charge of Transport, Wilhelm Haferkamp, Member of the CEC in charge of Energy, the Supply Agency, Safeguards and Controls, Hans von der Groeben, Member of the CEC in charge of Internal Market (commercial and fiscal) and Regional Policy, Edoardo Martino, Member of the CEC in charge of External Relations, Guido Colonna Di Paliano, Member of the CEC in charge of Industrial Affairs, Jean-François Deniau, Member of the CEC in charge of External Trade and Financial Control, Albert Coppé, Member of the CEC in charge of Budgets, Levies, Credit and Investment and the Information Service, and Emmanuel Sassen, Member of the CEC in charge of the Rules of Competition. The meeting was held in Bruxelles, in the presence of H.E. Ambassador J. Robert Schaetzel, Head of the Mission of the United States to the EEC. The discussions focused on the main issues of common interest between the USA and the CEC. The common responsibility of both the USA and the CEC regarding the continuation of a liberal policy, notably in such areas as trade, but also the need to pursue a continuous cooperation between both sides were emphasized through these discussions.
