Signing of agreements with Baltic States

The European Union has today launched formal negotiations aimed at concluding Europe Agreements with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The negotiations were launched at a ceremony attended by Sir Leon Brittan, Vice-President of the EC in charge of External Economic Affairs (North America, Japan, China, Commonwealth of Independent States, Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe) and Trade Policy, Catherine Day, Deputy Head of Cabinet of Sir Leon Brittan, representing the EC, Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz, German Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and President in office of the Council, representing the Council of the EU, Jüri Luik, Estonian Minister for Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Ambassador Clyde Kull, Head of the Mission of Estonia to the EC, for Estonia, Valdis Birkavs, Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Ambassador Juris Kanels, Head of the Mission of Latvia to the EC, for Latvia, Povilas Gylys, Lithuanian Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Adolfas Venskus, Head of the Mission of Lithuania to the EC, and Dalia Grybauskaitė, Director for External Economic Relations in the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry.
